If you are looking for bed and breakfast in the South Lake District, a great starting point is www.lakedistrictinformation.com operated by Broughton Information Centre, based in Broughton in Furness on the edge of the national park. Broughton is a small and very popular village, although slightly off the main tourist trail which often stops at nearby Coniston. It is a proper village with an excellent butchers and grocers and some excellent pubs serving fine food and ales. It also has free parking around a lovely village square, just as you should expect. In 2012 and 2013 it has been making its name nationally as a centre of fine local produce. The local Broughton Village Bakery was recognised as one of the Top3 bakeries in the UK, by ITVs "Britain's Best Bakery" competition which aired on ITV in December 2012. In January 2013 Channel 5 aired Episode 2 of Great Northern Cookbook featuring local pig farmer Gary McClure taking the record for The World's Largest Cumberland sausage. The finale of the record was held in Broughton Square, where the village of Broughton in Furness turned out to witness the cooking of the sausage (as well as help out with the eating). Find out more at Woodland Free Range Meats.
If you can't make it to the Lake District this year, but would like a reminder of the beauty of the Lake District scenery, take a look at a local artist collaboration which is working on a Lake District Calendar, combining photography and prints of oil on canvas interpretations of classic Lake District scenes.
