The BrmmBrmm Motoring Guide to Guildford
Guildford is the county town of Surrey and lies 35 miles (56km) South West of London. It has been a prosperous market town for centuries and sits at the point where the River Wey breaks through the North Downs. It is a bustling town that has managed to retain plenty of architectural interest along side the less sympathetic buildings from the 1960’s and 70’s. Among its gems are the guilded clock of the Guildhall clock, and the courtyard of Archbishops Abbot’s Hospital, built in 1619 as a hospice for the elderly. The pedestrianisation of many of the streets and lanes around the High Street make exploration of the hidden nooks and crannies much easier.
Guildford is also a flourishing centre for commerce, with 5 major business with a significant presence in the town, being listed in the Financial Times Annual list of Top 500 Global Companies in 2011.
Vehicle production is still going strong in Guildford, over 100 years after the Dennis brothers made Guildford their home and first produced a motorised tricycle. They then progressed to car manufacture before focusing on commercial vehicles, and later fire engines and lawn mowers. The fact that Dennis are still manufacturing vehicles in Guildford is an amazing industrial success story.
