BB News March - April 2010

We have certainly seen a return to a "proper" winter this time round and I think like me you are now hoping the worst is over and itching to get behind the wheel and be off without any more weather interruptions to attend some of this year’s enthusiastically anticipated events.

Before updating you on news and events for the coming two months, you may well have noticed, if you take a regular look at BB News, that there has been a lack of updates for a few months. Unfortunately Pauline Hulme, who ran BB News and was involved with BrmmBrmm from the very beginning in early 1999, sadly passed away on August 23rd, 2009. This left a big gap in the life of her family, as well as BrmmBrmm. It is only proper then that our first item of news this year is a tribute to Pauline, who was very much appreciated by members of the BrmmBrmm Classic Network.

The thumbnail photograph which was on the BrmmBrmm home page for the last few years came from this photograph taken around 1965, with Pauline at the wheel of her beloved "Yvette". Yvette was a well travelled steed, as they both moved to Holland for a few years, while Pauline worked at ESTEC, the European Space TEchnology Centre, which became the European Space Agency. In letters home, Pauline lamented the quality of the local Dutch roads at the time, which were rattling poor Yvette to pieces. Finally, she took the decision to pass Yvette onto her brother for safe keeping, while she moved onto a more practical Ford Cortina. True to his word, her brother took care of Yvette, even replacing one of the broken front callipers which Pauline had been driving around with(out) for a few months. In fact contrary to popular belief, the collision between Yvette and a police car was not his fault, evidenced by the full acceptance of damages by the local constabulary.

This second photo shows Pauline several years later at her son's wedding in 2001. The car is not Yvette, but was certainly inspired by Yvette. I'm told that Pauline was doing "donuts" in the courtyard of the Scottish castle where the reception was held.

Yes, she is at the wheel - its a left hand drive import, first exported to to Boston, USA. Her son just came along for the (white knuckle) ride.


Pauline is sadly missed by her family, though they are consoled by a great many happy memories of a spirited lady, loved by all.
