Hello folks and may I wish you all a very Happy and prosperous New Year. In contrast to the previous year’s coldest December on record this year all hopes of a White Christmas were dashed being relatively mild. I hope you managed to get out and about to enjoy the festive holiday and don’t forget to send in your photos from over the Christmas break, it would be great to see your individual and club pictures.
It won’t be long now before the first signs of spring are here bringing with them the hopes of warmer and longer days and we will start thinking of the approaching Classic events of the year.
Here is a great photo from Merlin Events New Years Day Meet at Crekerne, Somerset, which we featured in the last edition of BrmmBrmm News Forthcoming Events. It was their 1st year at the site of the historic Haselbury Mill having previously been staged at the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeolvilton. It was a record year with 178 cars attending. Some rare and interesting cars were seen in the lakeside field, including a 4 1/2 litre Bentley, MG 18/80 ex-Spa Grand Prix Aston Martin 15/98, two almost identical Jensen-Healey Estates, Citroen Maserati, Bristol 603, Healey Abbot DHC and much more.
This picture is of the winning car, car 20, a 1965 Volvo 131 Amazon driven by Roger Bricknall (Bodmin)and Ryan Pickering(Totton,Southampton) in the 17th annual HERO’s Le Jog 1400 mile event from Lands End to John O”Groats on Saturday December 10th. After leaving Lands End they headed for their first overnight stop in Telford, taking part in the longest night navigation section ever in the history of the event, arriving some 17 hours later, but the grins on most of the tired faces were proof that the majority were ‘enjoying’ the challenge. Six hours later they were on the road again heading for their next stop at Gosforth on the outskirts of Newcastle. The route saw them heading through Cheshire and into the Yorkshire dales. After lunch crews tackled the first section with snow on their way to the Tan Hill Inn. At 08.30am the crews were on the road again heading for John O’Groats on the most grueling section, driving for 26 hours with only short breaks. As the crews headed into the Highlands the weather became severe and as conditions worsened, a regularity section near Kinloch Rannoch was cancelled and two other sections of the route were closed near Dalwhinnie. Tomas de Vargas Machuca, Managing Director of HERO, who was driving an iconic 1973 BMW 1602, said: "This is one of the most testing events that we have ever run, and is one of the toughest in the world, but that is exactly what people who take part in this event want and everyone seems to have enjoyed it.”
