Secretary’s Report January 2012 2011

Hi All
The Christmas Dinner was great fun with a meal much improved on last year’s. 36 members also enjoyed a sumptuous raffle and best of all good company.
The Enthusiast of the Year Shield was awarded to Gerald and Irene Williamson and the Stuart Greeves Memorial Cup to Keith Medland. This cup is awarded by the Secretary/s to the member who has been the most help during the year.
Luckily this year we did not have the snow , ice and worst of all salt for our traditional Christmas Day MG drive. This year I went with Rosie to walk on the beach at Port Wrinkle. Well Sal was in Zanzibar, also without snow etc. but no MG and my two sons had gone surfing so I did not have to repeat the Riviera Run ‘family car experience’. However I appear not to have trained her well enough in the rules of life ‘according to The Book of MG’. In particular the infamous third commandment, ‘Thou shalt put the roof down every time, unless it’s raining.’ So it was roof up and a toasty car and a bracing walk on the beach as a pre dinner aperitif . Meanwhile Sal was snorkelling in the Indian Ocean also toasty I expect!
With best wishes and Happy New Year. Keith & Sally

Chairman's Christmas Report 2011

Hi All..
Well this year seems to have flown by - again! The Club has had another successful year gaining some new members along the way.
The Committee have met several times during this year and have been trying very hard to ensure that everything has continued to run smoothly. So I should really like to thank them all for the hard work they have put in to make sure that there have been plenty of shows and events for our members to enjoy.
They have been particularly valuable this year in supporting me through my cancer
surgery and ongoing treatment and I am very grateful or their help and support. Thank you especially to John Hunt who has had to deputise for me at very short notice on a couple of occasions. Thanks also to Sally & Keith for volunteering to replace Hilary - a tough act to follow but I think that are doing a great job.
Thanks to the members of TVMGOC for the beautiful flowers the club sent me when I was not well and to all the members who sent cards, emails and flowers, or visited or phoned - you really helped me through it.
Finally I should like to wish you a very Merry Christmas 2011 and the very best of all you wish for in the coming New Year - let’s make it a successful one getting out and about in our MGs - whether it’s for Sunday Lunch Runs or to the many shows we support during the season.
Best Octagonal Wishes, Mo

Secretary’s Report December 2011

Hi All
November is usually a cold quiet month and I was worried that there would not be much in this newsletter. Luckily so far it has not been very cold and several members drove to the Sunday lunch with their roofs down. I took my daughter, Rosie, who preferred a ‘toasty’ car, but I managed to get the rear window unzipped. Also many members have sent some lovely pictures and articles , so thank you all.
The Committee meeting discussed the club’s 30th Celebration Run and it's looking really good, so look out for the entry form.
Sally has sent an article about her adventures and as you will see she has not found much hope for a Ugandan MGOC. This is probably because every town has speed humps about 2ft high and 95% of the cars are Toyotas.
As you know we are selling our Morris and have advertised on a couple of classic car sites. The best response so far is. ”Hello, is it a good buy”? Well I suppose it is to the point! Any suggestions for a reply...’ Yeah, well good’, Awesome, or from Cornwall, ’ansome’, but i don’t think I can use ’banging’ though!
I’ve been reading some articles about the increased % of Ethanol in Petrol and the possible damage to the brass and copper components in classic cars. Apparently BP Premium is the only fuel with a low percentage at the moment, but at £1.45 a litre I think I will have to put a full tank on my Christmas list!
With best wishes and Happy Christmas. Keith & Sally

Secretary’s Report November 2011

Hi All
October began with the sad news that Brian Lewis died suddenly on 30th September, which was also his birthday. Ten members attended his funeral at Efford Crematorium. Brian was an enthusiastic member of the club attending many events with Rita in his cherished MGF. He will be much missed and we hope that Rita will still be able to join us for future events.
October has been a bit quiet but Clive and Joe completed the Exmoor Rut on a lovely sunny day and there were some MGs at the Saltash Ferry 50 event. The ferry across the river Tamar at Saltash existed for 900 years and ended on the 23 October 1961 when the bridge was opened. A classic car show and parade across the bridge to the Devon side was well supported., and the toll was free for us.
Meanwhile in Uganda Sally has been teaching practical art to classes of 85 trainee teachers and delivering a stack of corrugated iron sheets to roof a school. These were carried on the back of their pickup, well that is until they fell off. As you can see its a rare MG Toyota Pickup.
With best wishes to you all. Keith & Sally

Secretary’s Report October 2011

Hi All
Summer is now over and just a few runs left before we settle into our winter schedule of monthly meetings, with speakers and Sunday runs to lunches.
In September we have had an enjoyable Cornish Riviera run down to Falmouth, the Walkhampton show, which was quiet as the weather was a bit windy and dull and it was competing with the Americas Cup in Plymouth Sound.
This event also meant a change in the starting point for the Riviera run from Plymouth Hoe to Admiralty House in Devonport . Like many other runs the length is getting shorter to help keep costs down. When I first did this run, in 1999 we ended up at Lands End and the lunch stop was at Falmouth. Other runs have ended at Penzance, St Ives, and Newquay.
A few of us had a discussion about this at lunch time and the consensus was that shorter trips and more chatting time was a good thing. We also felt that runs like the Moor to Sea that had little walks to views and games made it more fun.
With this in mind planning has already started for the Christmas meal and the Club’s 30th anniversary run in 2012.
With best wishes to you all. Keith & Sally

Secretary’s Report September 2011

Hi All
Another summer has almost passed us by, but we have had plenty of events to keep us busy. We have reports on the English Riviera Classic car show, Mt Edgcumbe, St Austell Brewery, the American and Classic car show and the event which signals the end of the summer to me , Morval.
By the time you read this I will be in Uganda working as a volunteer at a primary teaching college. When I was staying on the campus where my sister lives I was told how the trainee teachers are taught art theory only, so my plan is to teach practical art. This is not as easy as you may expect as there are no available art materials. So I plan to use materials from the environment and recycling so that when they become teachers they can put these ideas into practice.
This was a rather last minute opportunity which I really wanted to take advantage of. I have been given a sabbatical from work and I plan to go for 7 months! So please can I wish you all well and apologies for not being able to say goodbye to many of you before going.
Keith will be holding the fort while I am away so he will be able to keep you updated on my progress.
With best wishes to you all. Sally

Secretary’s Report August 2011

Hi All
Keith and I have just returned from a very enjoyable 3 weeks holiday in Uganda. We stayed with my sister who works there and she really gave us an action packed itinerary. Keith’s daughter came with us and completed a work placement in a children’s nursery for the first week. We visited Queen Elizabeth National Park where we went on an early morning game drive, here we had close encounters with Elephant, Buffalo, Crocodiles, Hippos and numerous other animals and beautiful birds. We visited schools and nursery schools, went Chimp tracking at Kibale National Park. Went on a boat trip up the Nile to Murchison Falls and camped one night where Keith spotted a hippo grazing 10 feet away from our bed, so we have come home now for a rest!
I have been reading about the exploits of the TVMGOC members and it seems as if you have been having a busy July too! So I would like to thank all who contributed to this edition of the newsletter for their reports and photos.
With best wishes to you all. Keith & Sally

Secretary’s Report July 2011

Hi All
Another busy June has just sped past and many of you have been taking part in various activities which included the Dartmouth Heritage Steam Rally, the Mendip Vintage and Classic Car Tour, the Atlantic Coast Express run, Castle Drogo Classic Car Weekend and a more recently a treasure hunt organised by Alan and Alison, finishing with a great Sunday lunch at Cartwheels restaurant at St Eve.
We had a beautiful day for the treasure hunt, 16 cars took part and we drove along the tiniest lanes in South East Cornwall. Here we encountered frisky horses and trees across the road and experienced grass brushing our sumps on both sides of the cars which all contributed to an exciting time.
Further events are planned for July with Powderham Classic Car Weekend, the English Riviera Classic Car Show at Paignton and the Boconnoc Steam Fair.
Keith and I will be organising a pre meeting run on August 3rd at 7pm from the Dartmoor Diner, so we would be pleased to see as many of you who can make it.
With best wishes to you all. Keith & Sally
