2010 JANUARY New Year's Day saw some cars and drivers braving the elements at the Yeovilton meeting. It has been a long winter. sadly due to our winter wonderland some of our usual events where we either spectate or marshall were cancelled- in particular the Exeter trial. An enjoyable time was had at Limpley Stoke with Devon,Dorset and Glavon groups of the TR Register. Our thanks to Neville and Christine for another enjoyable get-together. FEBRUARY A number of members met for Sunday lunch at the Tom Mogg. Unfortunately the food did not live up to our expectations-so yet another venue to cut off our list. Attendance at monthly meetings appear to be very good especially for the time of year. MARCH Yet another lunch meet at Dunkerswell Aerodrome was well attendedand saw three Triumphs in the car park. A TR3A,MK1 2000,and the Captains Stag. Some local flying was active including the Red Baron in replica bi-plane. Our thanks to JC for organising the day and the food was very good. Then to continue some serious motoring on E60 to our lunch stop in the coastal town of Carnac. Lunch and pudding in the form of delicious tarts from the patisserie-and you can guess who had second helpings! leaving Carnac only a short journey to our accommodation in Vannes center. Excellent hotel with secure car basement garaging. Meet and greet 2.5 register embers. APRIL 18th WESSEX and NEW FOREST RUN Was a fantastic run and the weather could not have been better. 101 cars turned up which included Helen and Mario, and Malcolm and Sue. We started from Avon Heath Country Park at about 11am. The route took in the scenery around Avon,Burley,Rhinefield, through Brockenhurst and Sway with the halfway halt at Boldre. Boldre War Memorial Hall and adjacent field was where we parked for the Halfway stop which proved to be a popular choice with its pleasant outlook. After time to relax and take advantage of complementary teas and coffees we got underway again for the second half which took us out to Beaulieu passing the motor Museum, out through Beaulieu heath through Lyndhurst and on to Emery Down,Bolderwood, through Fordingbridge and Sandleheath, finally ending up at the Compasses Inn at Damerham. The route in total was some 67 miles. The whole day was very well planned with marshalls placed around the run ensuring nobody got lost. We were hampered by a cycle race that was taking part on parts of the course, they seem to think they own the road! APRIL 26th DIVE IT DAY The Jurassic 6 Well the last run was so good we just had to repeat it. Cars met at B&Q Taunton and it would happen to the conservation officer- Sainsbury's server started to malfunction-pump1,pump2, then jackpot pump3 dispensed the correct amount of the golden liquid for Stag driver. Once on our way retracing previuos route-Blackdowns,Stockland Hill and down to Charmouth for coffee stop with all drivers conforming to parking regulations. Now driving on via Bridport,Burton Bradstock and on to coastal road- dramatic stop by Stag operator- the sea mist proving a difficulty for navigator so crew tacked back to port. Remaining cars dropped down to Abbotsbury tropical gardens for tour, teas and madelines. Journey back via tunnel to Windwhistle Inn where carvery was served to end a good run. Ours thanks to Helen and Mario. MAY 23rd STANDARD TRIUMPH MARQUE DAY at PRESCOTT We met at Sedgemoor services on the M5 at 8am. Three cars TR7V8. TR6 and a TR4A. The weather was absolutely superb and we proceeded up the M5 all of us looking forward to the breakfast stop. We arrived trouble free, enjoyed our breakfast and travelled on to Prescott. There was a bit of a hold up going in but once in we had a really good parking spot. Whilst Mario went off to sign in,as he was the only one going up the hill, the rest of us got out the chairs and table and enyoyed a cup of coffee. We were near the entrance so had a good view of all the cars coming in. I don't know how many Triumphs/Standards were there but it was packed with most every model being present. Some of the Le Mans TRs and the Rallying 2500 saloons were parked up. There was also quite a large auto jumble. By about 1pm it was really hot and we were able to enjoy our picnic lunch with a glass of beer. Mario, with Malcolm as passenger, enjoyed his runs up the hill, tyres smoking off the start line . Soon it was time to leave and we made our way back the M5 still in shirt sleaves unbeleivable for this country. We stopped for a meal near Burnham before making our way home. A very enjoyable and warm day. 30thMAY KILLERTON Six cars TR3A, TR4A, 2 TR6s, TR7V8, and a 2000Mk1 assembled at Old Well layby on a bright and dry Sunday morning for the run to the National Trust Car show on the Kilerton estate. A pleasant drive to allocated parking in the grounds to be greeted by Rob and Sue and two of the Dukes of Hemyock(Phil and John) and our very own Don Garlits in the Triumph 2000 Mk1 with lovely lady Val. Also present was Le Patron de France sporting the latest fashion in head attire. A tour of the show followed meeting up with Devon Group TRs. On reporting back to base it appeared a splinter group was now in operation. No worries there because all enquiries being directed to official Somerset Triumphs base.Thats debatable. Enjoying the cars.gardens, jazz band, teas and house, it is said that the estate former owners could ride from coast to coast on their own land. It was a good job that they rode when you consider their shoe collection-our services are now required in the form of Chris, Anne, and Helen- historians of the Clarke shoe empire. Late afternoon and cars now leaving, the party breaking away and some stopping for an evening meal at the Halfway Inn, Willand and again displaying of cars in the parking area. Thanks to those who came and made it an enjoyable day. TRAINS and TRIUMPHS DAY-Sunday June 27th With an invitation to join the TSSC and the Devon Group of the Tr Register a number of cars travelled to the South Devon railway at Buckfastleigh for a gathering in an adjacent field, After the usual greetings and tour of the cars some of us enjoyed the train trip and cream teas down the river valley to Totnes and back. On return Phil Tucker had arrived in his 1959 TR3S recreation which drew quite a lot of attention. The day drwaing to a close and the party journeying back home made a whistle stop at the Anchor Inn Hillfarance. Our thanks to the TSSC and Devon Group. FORDE ABBEY JULY 29th A beautiful summers day encouraged an excellent turn out of cars to this mid week country show within the stately grounds of Forde Abbey.A fascinating historic house surrounded by 30acres of glorious gardens. The perfect setting being provided on a grassy plateau between the mount and the bog garden for the historic vehicle display. Our cars providing most of the range from TR3A to Stag. Just for the ladies ,a country fair selling all manner of produce from pies to trinkets. Some have said that it was the OAPs outing but I disagree as there was pleny of interest for both young and old alike and vote to return next year. Third Sampford PEVERELL HISTORIC GATHERING 15th AUGUST The small village show was supported by a number of cars from our club-TR3A,TR4A, 2 TR6s and 2 TR7V8s. Another fine day in a secret location with beer on tap. Some cars enjoying a small lunch time run around the village and hills finishing the day with a meal at the Halfway Inn Willand. And who was the lucky raffle winner? our thanks to the Astburys and crew for this enjoyable show. HENSTRIDGE AIR and VEHICLE SHOW AUGUST 28th Where is Podimore? A Group of cars including Mike King and the Imps gathered at Podimore services for the run to Henstidge Air field (HMS Dipper). Has anyone seen a yellow car? Contact has now been made with yellow car heading for Wincanton so plenty of time for Sue to enjoy her coffee. Further communication results in Spitfire arrival- so cars now run in convoy to the Airfield and marshalled to parking area. The day being dry and bright but with a cold wind blowing . The group a circular seating area in order to keep our Chairlady warm but spitfire driver(not pilot) came good when opening his boot he produced thermal socks as worn by the staff at Cold Store. Now attired in blanket and socks Helen could draw on her wikipedia reserve for all manner of useless subjects. A tour of the aircraft and BBMF Lancaster fly past made for an excellent day.
